Who is Dotty Nicholas: A Champion for Sickle Cell Education

Jamaican-born Dotty Nicholas, affectionately known as “Miss Dotty” in the sickle cell community, has dedicated her life to improving the quality of life for those affected by sickle cell disease. As a retired registered nurse, founding member of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada and former president of the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario, her commitment to this cause spans decades.

The Impact of Our Scholarships

Since its inception, the DNSC Scholarship Fund Association has awarded more than 50 scholarships to young Sickle Cell Disease patients pursuing post-secondary education. These scholarships extend beyond mere financial assistance-they represent hope, recognition and the belief that students with sickle cell disease deserve the same educational opportunities as their peers.

Our scholarship program provides support over a four-year period to recipients who maintain a B average in their studies. This sustained commitment helps students complete their education despite the physical challenges and healthcare demands of living with sickle cell disease.

I’m so grateful to Miss Dotty for supporting my pursuit for post-secondary education. This scholarship helps a lot more than any of you would know.

How We Support Students

The Dotty Nicholas Sickle Cell Scholarship Fund Association provides more than just financial assistance.

We offer:

  • Financial Support: Scholarships for tuition and educational expenses

  • Community Connection: Linking students with similar challenges

  • Recognition: Celebrating the achievements of students with Sickle Cell Disease

  • Advocacy: Raising awareness about educational needs of Sickle Cell Disease students

Each year, we host our annual scholarship awards ceremony to recognize new recipients and celebrate their academic achievements. This event brings together event sponsors, donors, supporters and representatives of the sickle cell community in a celebration of educational excellence.

Why Your Support Matters

Sickle cell disease presents lifelong challenges, but education provides a pathway to better opportunities.

Sickle cell disease presents lifelong challenges, but education provides a pathway to better opportunities.

While we advocate for improved care and treatment, we also recognize that education is essential for these young people to become productive citizens.

Your donation directly supports students like Enoch, who have benefitted from the professional and community work of Dotty Nicholas and continue to achieve academic success despite health challenges.

A new day is dawning for sickle cell care in Canada. Your contribution helps ensure that as we continue advocating and lobbying for better healthcare, we’re also supporting the next generation of students affected by this condition.
